Sound Directors of the World UNITE!
The 100th AES Convention provides the backdrop for an historic meeting of
record producer and sound director organisations. The term 'Sound Director'
has been adopted in response to confusions in meaning that have arisen in
official circles between 'producer' (meaning record company) and 'Producer'
(meaning 'sound director'). Whatever they are to be called, the meeting
will be open to all record producers, sound directors, programmers, re-mixers
and engineers and will take place in Room 17 in the Bella Centre on Sunday
12th May at 2.30.
BASF are supporting the event and will be providing refreshments for attendees.
Concerns amongst European sound directors regarding the way they are paid
both by the record companies and collection societies and how their role
is recognised have prompted the formation of a new grouping - The European
Sound Directors Association - E.S.D.A.
ESDA will co-ordinate the activities of the organisations in their submissions
on behalf of the profession to the European Commission and the World Intellectual
Property Organisation. It will be the first time that such a meeting has
been held in Denmark, and Re-Pro International is taking the opportunity
to encourage Danish and other Scandinavian producers to join the ESDA initiative.
The meeting will be discussing such topics as - 'Why do some sound directors
get paid performance royalties and others not?' - 'When is a producer a
performer ?' - 'When should engineers qualify for royalties?'.
