European allies of Re-Pro

Re-Pro Italia

Formed in October 1995 at a meeting in Modena.

One of Re-Pro Italia's main concerns, in common with most producer groups is 'Neighbouring Rights' income.

Contact: Dr Wilhelm Schlemm via e-mail at [email protected] The "Verband Deutscher Tonmeister" (VDT) is the German association of recording producers and sound engineers. Founded in 1950 by sound engineers working in the Munich film industry, it now has slightly more than one thousand members coming from all sections of sound recording, broadcasting and TV stations, theatres, disc recording studios and, of course, film production. More than 140 members are students who are preparing themselves to become the tonmeisters or sound engineers of the future.

Every two years, the most important activity of VDT is to organise the 'Tonmeistertagung' - an international convention on sound design. This is a four day event with a huge exhibition in the field of professional sound recording with approximatively 200 exhibitors and a large congress programme with more than 100 papers, all of them being translated simultaneously German/English or English/German. Last time, in November 1994, more than 4,000 visitors were counted. In addition, VDT from time to time organises seminars on different issues concerning the profession of tonmeisters for just a few participants. Five times a year a magazine especially for VDT members is published.

Other benefits for VDT members are highly reduced rates for the insurance of electronic equipment and musical instruments as well as an accident insurance focussed on the special needs of tonmeisters.

VDT is trying to claim copyright and performance income for those of their members doing an artistic job, so that they are paid, in common with many of our British colleagues, by GVL. Sadly, all attempts to persuade GVL to acknowledge VDT members as participants in performance revenue have been without any success up until now.

It should be an important goal for all of our organisations to successfully lobby for a general European law to let tonmeisters, realisateurs, sound directors and studio producers all participate in the great market of music recordings.

An international collaboration of associations like VDT and Re-Pro and those of other countries should be organized.
