WHERE DO YOU STAND ON COMPUTER-HELD PERSONAL DATA?
A new Data Protection bill is likely to become law before the end of the year, which will extend the limits of current legislation on data processing, particularly as it affects personal data; this originates in an EU directive aimed at preserving the rights and freedoms of data subjects [i.e. people whose details are put into databases].
So what has this to do with me?, we hear you ask. Well, even if you have successfully claimed exemption from the requirement to notify details of your processing operations to the Data Protection Registrar, you will now be obliged to abide by the Data Protection Principles, and provide access on demand to data subjects. Other changes may come to light as the bill passes into legislation; we shall watch on your behalf, and report as its relevance to members becomes clearer.
