WHAT ARE MAILING LISTS & HOW DO THEY WORK?
- Mailing lists are an easy way to share email with a group or community of subscribers, all with similar interests.
- You join a mailing list by subscribing. Once your subscription has been accepted you will receive all email sent to the list by any member of it. Equally importantly you will also be able to contribute to the discussions by sending mail to the list's address.
- Our lists are 'restricted' lists which means membership is only available to APRS members and associates. No-one else will be able to read or join in the discussions.
- The lists are run by a list-owner who will will approve all subscriptions and who also has the power to moderate the list or unsubscribe members if necessary. The list owner will also be available to help with any queries you may have relating to the administration of the lists.
- The lists are fully secure and you will not receive any unsolicited email as a result of joining a mailing list.
HOW TO GET THE BEST OUT OF MAILING LIST MEMBERSHIP
There are no rules and regulations as such, but the following hints and tips should help you get the best out of your list membership:
- Be proactive. Don't wait for someone else to start! Dive right in, introduce yourself, ask your question or say what's on your mind.
- Get to know your email program and don't accept defaults!
- When replying, don't requote more than you have to from previous messages. Remember - almost everyone will have seen the message you are replying to, you only need to quote enough to put your reply in context.
- Post in plain text - HTML is inefficient, unnecessary and not everyone will have an email program which will display it correctly. Microsoft's Outlook Express is the main culprit here because by deault it sends in HTML. Click here for help with Outlook Express.
- Don't use the list where private email would be more appropriate!
